History
If Kerry is the kingdom, Fairview is the castle

A family story more than a century in the making

The Fairview Boutique Hotel began its present life in May 2002 after extensive renovations of what had been a local townhouse. Its deeper story, however, stretches back generations, beginning with a family whose warmth and resilience shaped everything that followed.

Early beginnings

A small café overlooking Fairhill Market

In the early 1900s, Mary McGillicuddy, known locally as Nana Mac, ran several small businesses in Killarney while raising nine children on her own. Her strong work ethic and sense of welcome became part of the family’s character.
In the 1950s she purchased a terraced building on Michael Collins Place and opened The Fairview Café. The name reflected its view across Fairhill Market, where locals, traders and farmers gathered each day.
Mary later gifted the building to her daughter Maureen and Maureen’s husband, Leo O’Neill, as a wedding present, marking the beginning of the family’s long connection to hospitality.

The Journey

A new chapter

From family home to B&B

Tourism in Killarney was still modest at the time, but Maureen and Leo saw the growing need for guest accommodation. They extended their small family home by adding three bedrooms and a single bathroom.
This modest Bed and Breakfast quickly became known for its warmth and sincerity, qualities that have remained central to The Fairview ever since.

Finding a foothold in tourism

A young boy handing out business cards

At only ten years old, their son James would walk to the railway station to hand out business cards to newly arrived visitors, inviting them to stay at The Fairview.
This simple gesture marked the beginning of his lifelong career in hospitality. In the 1980s, James worked in a record shop selling vinyls, tapes and televisions, but he continued to see potential in tourism and in his family’s central location.
When a neighbouring site came up for sale, he purchased it and, while still working full time, developed an 11 bedroom Bed and Breakfast with ensuite rooms, which was considered progressive at the time.
It became a true family effort, supported by his parents and siblings.

A growing vision

Creating a four star guesthouse

As Maureen and Leo retired, James and his wife Shelley began imagining something new for The Fairview. Tourism in Killarney was evolving and they saw an opportunity to create a four star guesthouse that offered comfort, quality and a personal touch.

Architectural plans were drawn up and finance was sought. Banks urged them to scale back, but they continued to pursue their vision. Two days before Christmas, they secured the funding needed. Their new 20 bedroom guesthouse opened in the early 2000s and marked a turning point for the property.

Soon after the guesthouse opened, the adjoining building became available, but rising prices placed it beyond reach for a small family business. Although it felt like a missed opportunity, it later became clear that stepping back allowed the family to strengthen their existing property and focus on guest experience.

A family strengthens its roots

The creation of The Copper Kettle

As their family grew, James and Shelley moved into a separate home nearby and transformed another terraced house into The Copper Kettle, a sister B&B known for its charm and friendly welcome.

A dream realised

Two buildings become one boutique hotel

Years passed, loans were repaid and The Fairview earned an excellent reputation.
Then, unexpectedly, the adjoining property became available again. This time, the family was ready. In 2014 they purchased the building and united the two properties, transforming The Fairview into the boutique hotel it is today.

What began as a café more than sixty years earlier had become a thriving, family run hotel shaped by determination, resourcefulness and genuine Irish hospitality.

Today

A family run hotel shaped by resilience and welcome

The Fairview Boutique Hotel continues to be family run by James and Shelley O’Neill and their three sons, Ryan, Dion and Evan.
Their story is woven through the building, the service and the warm atmosphere that welcomes every guest.
